SOUTHERN UTAH JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SHOW
2014 - 76TH ANNUAL
All Junior Livestock Show Participants and Parents:
The Southern Utah Jr. Livestock show will be held August 5-8, 2014 at the Sevier County Fairgrounds. The committee met at the end of February and would like to make you aware of the following dates and changes:
STEERS Weigh-in will be Saturday, April 5, from 8:30-10:30 am at Johnson's Feedlot in Aurora. Recommended weights will be from 800-1000 lbs at weigh-ins. Market steers must weigh between 1,100-1,400 lbs at show time. All others will be sifted. The steers will be subject to a shrink up to 4% this year at weigh ins. This is to offset the afternoon weigh-in along with the 3 day stress that the cattle will experience at the stock show. The committee is also HIGHLY ENCOURAGING all steer exhibitors to find a buyer for their own cattle this year. The reason is that the show committee does their very best to market the cattle (or floor the steers) but buyers for fat cattle in our region have become very scarce. The price the steers bring and then passed on to the exhibitors is only what we receive. By having your own buyer, it is our intent that the kids will realize more money for their projects.
HOGS Tagging will be Saturday, May 10 from 8:00-9:30 am at the Sevier County Fairgrounds. Recommended hog weights will be from 50-100 lbs at tagging. Market hogs must be between 220-280 lbs at show time. Hogs exceeding 280 lbs may be shown, but the participant will only be paid for 280 lbs. Hogs over 350 lbs will be sifted. Hog worming shots will be available.
LAMBS Tagging will be Saturday, May 10 from 8:00-9:30 am at the Sevier County Fairgrounds. Recommended lamb weights will be from 40-75 lbs at tagging. Market lambs should be between 100-150 lbs at show time. Lambs exceeding 150 lbs may be shown, but the participant will only be paid for 150 lbs. All ewe lambs must have a scrapie tag at show time and are recommended to have a tag at weigh-in.
REMEMBER Exhibitors will need to pay $5.00 for every beef, hog or lamb tagged, on the tagging date. Fees collected will be used for our college scholarships. Exhibitors must submit an entry form postmarked on or before May 25, 2014 to enter the show. Exhibitors may show two beef or one beef and one small animal or three animals with a maximum of two animals in any one species. At the auction, exhibitors will only be able to sell one (1) animal per species. All grand, reserve and county champions must be sold. Animals not sold at the auction may be floored and sent to the packer. Shrink will not be used on any species.
NEW ITEM - WEBSITE/FACEBOOK All participants must bring a Southern Utah Jr. Livestock show entry form to weigh-in already filled out. Make sure it is signed and completed. All youth showing under 4-H must enroll in 4-H prior to weigh-ins. No paper entry forms will be available at weigh-ins!! Also, we have set up a Facebook page - Southern Utah Jr. Livestock Show. Please go on and "like" the page. We will be keeping this updated with all the current information - tagging dates, show dates, pictures, etc.
It is important to remember we are raising and feeding market class animals and we need to maintain that standard in order for the market to continue to buy our stock show animals. If you need a feeding plan for your animal projects, Kim Chapman, USU Extension Agent, has offered to help. You may contact him at the 4-H Office at 435-893-0470.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Bob Miller at 435-979-2235, Kim Chapman at the 4-H Office, FFA Advisors at your high school, or one of the following committee members: Scott Christensen, Lamb Chairman; Curt Smith, Hog Chairman; Keith Hampton, Beef Chairman. We all wish you good luck with your projects and may you find enjoyment in your success!
